A Volunteer's Eye View - THE JOYS OF BEING AN ENERGY SURVEYOR!
Mike, who has been part of the HES team since 2006, says "This service will make a real difference to society's attitude to the use of the Earth's resources and the effects we all have on climate change."
I joined the survey team and attended one of the training events early in 2006. This session gave me an introduction to HES and was followed up by another surveyor doing a survey for me at my home. As I gained in confidence I found the whole process very satisfying. I love talking to people and it is a continual source of amazement to me to discover the number of ways there are to make and present a cup of tea!
Seriously though, as I get more and more into the task of carrying out surveys I am greatly encouraged how most people are very receptive to energy saving ideas and practices. Some of my surveyors colleagues express anxieties regarding their lack of knowledge of the details of building construction, heating systems and so on. I say to them the best way to learn is to get out there and do it. If I have questions to which I do not readily know the answer I readily say "I don't know the answer, but i know a man who does and I will find out for you."
I have probably done sixty surveys by now and I really believe that all of the households that I have visited have gained at the very least some snippet of useful information and most have gained a great deal. For my own part I have met a lot of lovely, welcoming people and learned much about the practical details of making homes more energy efficient.
The whole exercise for me has been, and I trust will continue to be, a very enjoyable experience. This service will make a real difference to society's attitude to the use of the Earth's resources and the effects we all have on climate change.
We need more surveyors to take this message out to the people of the area. I say to would be surveyors " you can do it, get out there and go for it, your belief in your message will carry you through."
