Big Green Challenge
Press Release Sept 09
Light Foot’s Household Energy Service (HES) began as a little scheme in Bishop’s Castle, advising friends and neighbours on the best ways to cut their fuel bills and make their homes energy efficient. It is now a home energy service available to 15,000 homes across the Marches and one of ten finalists in NESTAs UK-wide Big Green Challenge.
Rachel Francis of HES said “We have had a very big year and made lots of improvements. Now we are waiting for the final judge’s visit to find out how we fare amongst the ten finalists for the one million pound prize money. But despite the excitement of the finalist year, we are still just a local scheme at heart. We are proud to be locally run and owned. ”
One of the developments at HES this year has been to bring in new offers and discounts for HES clients.
Dave Luckhurst said “we have local companies who can do bulk deals through HES because of our broad client base. For example we have a local solar hot water systems expert offering a £200 discount through HES for clients who would like to install solar thermal. We’re also working to set up a “man in a van” scheme to help clients with loft clearance etc in preparation for upgrading their insulation. Wherever we can get funding, these services will be offered free. It’s not just a win win situation; it’s a win win win situation: Local businesses benefit, local homes benefit and the environment benefits.”
